Even today a commemorative stone still recalls the murder carried out in 1876

1876 A murder on the Stilfser Joch road

The large percentage of visitors from English-speaking countriesis noticeable. One reason für this lay in a murder which made Trafoi famous overnight in Britain.

On 16th July 1876, near the Weißen Knott between the Franzenshöhe and Trafoi on the Stilser Joch road, the 40-year¬old Frenchman Henry Perreau de Tourville, murdered an Englishwoman called Madaleine Miller.

The murder and the trial held in Bozen in 1877 attracted wide coverage in the world press. Tourville was sentenced to death and later had his sentence commuted to 20 years' imprisonment. He finally died in a penitentiary.
