1854-1904 Maintenance

In 1854, to conserve the Stilfser Joch road, the reforesting of the edges of the woods alongside the road was begun. After 1859, when Lombardy went to Italy, no more conservation work was carried out.

After 1859, when Lombardy went to Italy, no more conservation work was carried out. The side walls and protective walls broke down,
the wooden galleries burned down and the wooden beams decayed. Even around the turn of the century there were re¬ports that the road had to be sprayed because of the extent of the dust. In the new century more and more automobile and motor cycle traffic drove along the road with a maximum permitted speed limit of 15 kms. per hour.

In 1904 cycling was still forbidden between Trafoi and the Ferdinandshöhe and the district council also considered restricting motor traffic on the Stilfser Joch road, as there were very often collisions between horse-drawn carriages and mo¬tor vehicles and because many horses shied because of the noise and the increased dust caused by the cars and motor cycles.
